Holiday Sadness and Darker Days - How to Keep Yourself Feeling Comforted and Supported

The holidays can be a tough time for many of us. We might be feeling sad because we're missing loved ones who are no longer with us or because we're struggling with our own personal issues. The shorter days and longer nights can also add to our feelings of sadness and loneliness.

But there are things we can do to help ourselves feel better during this time of year. In this blog post, we'll explore some of the simplest ways we can deal with holiday sadness and darkness and how to find comfort and support.

Why Do We Feel Sad during the holidays?

There are a number of reasons why we might feel sad during the holidays. Maybe we're missing loved ones who have passed away, or we're feeling lonely because we don't have anyone to spend the holidays with. Perhaps we're struggling with our own personal issues, such as financial problems or relationship difficulties. Whatever the reason, it's important to remember that you're not alone in feeling this way.

What Can We Do To Deal With Holiday Sadness?

There are a few things you can do to help deal with your holiday sadness:

1. Talk to someone about how you're feeling.

This can be a friend, family member, therapist, or anyone else you feel comfortable talking to. It can be helpful to talk about what's causing your sadness and how you're coping with it. You can talk about your happy memories of past holidays and what you're looking forward to in the future.

Choose someone who will listen to you without judgment and who will offer support and understanding.

2. Do something nice for yourself.

Treat yourself to something you enjoy, such as a massage, a new book, or your favorite food. Or take some time for yourself to relax and do something you find calming, like yoga or meditation.

Doing something nice for yourself can help you feel mentally and physically better.

3. Reach out to others.

Even if you're feeling lonely, there are likely people in your life who care about you and would be happy to spend time with you. Try reaching out to family members, friends, or even your neighbors. Spending time with others can help take your mind off of your sadness and make you feel more connected.

Basically, reaching out to others can help you feel connected and supported, and it's also a great way to spread some holiday cheer!

4. Try Yoga or some other type of relaxation technique.

These can help to ease your mind and body and make you feel more relaxed and at ease. One great way to get started with yoga is with some online classes that actually walk you through each pose step-by-step.

5. Practice gratitude.

One of the best ways to combat sadness is to focus on what you're grateful for. Maybe you're grateful for your health, family, friends, or pet.

Gratitude meditation can be a great way to shift your focus from negative to positive thoughts. It can also help you appreciate all the good in your life, even when things are tough.
